To know her was to love her and to feel loved by her. Melva had a tremendous amount of grace and she never ceased to make others feel special. Whether it was her made from scratch biscuits, her sweet smiles, her warm hugs, or her sliding you the “best piece of chicken”, she always made you feel like you were her favorite person in the world.
Melva lived her life with 3 pillars that were evident to all who knew her.
Her faith was unmatched. She decided at a very early age that she was going to marry a preacher one day, so that she could go to church whenever she wanted. She married Rev. Marvin Holt Sr and together they established and pastored the First Pentecostal Church of Crestview for many years. She never wavered in her love for her savior, Jesus Christ and helped win many souls to His kingdom through her kindness.
Melva’s family was always a priority in her life. She consistently placed their needs above her own as angels always do. Her home was the “meeting place”, bursting at the seams with life, love and laughter and she wouldn’t have had it any other way. Her life has been devoted to caring for her children and their families and making sure that each of them knew just how much she cared about them individually.
Her love and service for the elderly was dear to her. While she worked in the kitchen at The Manor as a cook, she poured her heart and soul into making each meal special for the residents there. Melva was an incredible southern cook, and she took pride in fact that her people were given meals that tasted delicious and were made with love and care.
Proverbs 31
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Sister Holt was my first pastor’s wife, and she made such an impact into my life. She was one of the most godly women I have ever known. She was such a delight to be around, holding to her holiness and yet such a sweet sense of humor that connected her with those around her. She set a high standard and lived it in such a way that the Love of God just flowed from her. I am thankful for the privilege to have known her. May God comfort your hearts in all the days ahead.

Praying for comfort and strength for Sis. Holt’s family and loved ones. My Mother (Sis. Mary Alice (Merrell) Hatcher preached her first Revival as a teenager at Bro. & Sis. Holt’s Church in Crestview, FL. Their love and encouragement helped my Mother in her Ministry until she passed on 11/2/24. I heard her talk about them my entire life. My daughter took my Parents to visit Sis. Melva and her Church and family a few years ago and it just meant the world to them. She’s another Warrior of the Faith gone to her great reward. Our world has lost a treasure.

The older you become, the more you appreciate what others have done in your life. Melva and Marvin Holt were pioneers and refused to accept segregation. They welcomed our family (the McDaniel family) with open arms. Pastor Holt taught us the uncompromised Word of God. Sister Holt showed us the uncompromised Love of God! That combination established a lasting legacy that has continued for three generations of salvations in our family. Our families will be forever entwined by the grace of God. I want to personally thank Sister Holt for teaching us how to acknowledge and love the presence of God, letting us hang out all summer, for showing us how to make and sell the best peanut brittle in the County, feeding us as if we were her own kids, and loving us with a love that became a part of us! With greatest love and adoration of this precious and beautiful woman of God… we lift the extended Holt family up in our prayers.

Sister Holt was my first Pastor‘S Wife in Crestview. Two of my brothers are married into her family. I am so thankful to have known her and for all the wisdom that she gave to me. I will never forget our conversation when we went to Alabama, ladies retreat, She also lead me around and said I did not need my cane that she would be my guide. There is a picture of her and I with a girl at her church and sister. Holt said that she was the cripple girl, I was the blind lady, and she was the older woman. I never laughed so hard, her sense of humor was amazing. She’s gone to a lot of my siblings, weddings, and has been a part of our family gatherings. I recently had more surgeries on my eyes and before I went into surgery, she was talking to my sister-in-law and told her to tell me that if I needed anything to let her know and she would get it for me. She was so frail when I heard her voice. Before she passed, I went to her and seen her. She barely could speak, but she made sure she told me, I love you and her whisper. Thank you to her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for your precious mother, and everyone’s lives that she touched. She was everyone’s, granny, Holt. I love you, sister Holt. You have been a blessing in my life all these years.

Sister Holt was truly a gem among women. She was my first pastor’s wife and and wonderful example of dedication, love for God and for the people she served. What I remember most is her smile and her sweet, kindhearted spirit. She beamed with such radiance and had such a warm, welcoming manner that made everyone feel like they were part of the family. One of my fondest memories is learning how to make peanut brittle and work in the church. Those were some of the earliest days of my walk and oh, the patience she showed! I am thankful for the rich knowledge I gained in Brother and Sister Holt’s church and the foundation that centered me. Sister Holt will forever be an example to follow and will remain in my heart. I am holding the Holt family in my heart and sending my love to all of you.

It is rare to see such a gentle, kind person the exudes such influence and strength through her kindness. People were drawn to her and that attraction was truly the presence of the Lord that dwelled within her . Being around her, you knew you were in the presence of a Woman of God.
