Stephen Curtis Madden 69, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 in Crestview, Florida.
Stephen was born on August 15, 1955 in Florala, Alabama to Curtis and Nola Madden. Stephen was a lifelong resident of Okaloosa County. He was a farmer and a pool technician for many years.
Stephen Curtis Madden, more commonly known as “Mad Dog”, lived his life full throttle. He was a man who preferred to stay close to home and only under certain circumstances did he ever travel far.
As a boy he loved to hunt and fish and play cowboys. He was, up until her death, a “Mama’s Boy”. Those baby blue eyes were hard to say no to.
Even though circumstances took him away now and then, he always returned to the farm, the home he loved. Agriculture seemed to suit him for a while and then he decided cleaning pools might keep him closer to home and out of harms way. And so it began “Mad Dog’s Pool Service”.
Underneath that rough and tough surface was a tenderness that was rarely revealed except when his grandchildren came to visit for their daily popsicle. He was a proud man but often helped friends and family in need. He seemed to know everyone in Crestview and had plenty of stories to tell. His temper was hot but his smile was infectious. He never met a stranger. Rest in peace, brother. You will be missed.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Madden Jr. and Nola Faye Story Madden.
Stephen is survived by his son, Stephen Curtis Madden II and his wife, Indiana Madden, his daughters, Shawna Sabio and Nikki Reed, his sister and brother in-law Dianne Mallini and Tom, his sister, Karen Hoffman, his grandchildren, Stephen Curtis Madden, Easton Bryant Madden, Cadence Riley Madden, Ayonna Aplin, Keagan Aplin, Yasmin, Danny and Anya Sabio, Kinley Reed and Rilynn Reed.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Clear Springs Cemetery in Laurel Hill, Florida.
Brackney Funeral Service, Crestview, is entrusted with arrangements.

Steve, we shared the same birth month and for 9 of those days we were the same age. You would tell people we were “almost twins!” We played together with your big dump trucks and you never objected to me putting my dolls in the truck bed. We would load those trucks with snacks and pull them down the pasture for a picnic. – You taught me how to shoot your BB gun and when I cried after shooting my first bird, you said, “It’ll be alright.” – You taught me how to drive a tractor, a hay truck, and then a motorcycle. You took me for the ride of my life in the clay pit and promised not to go off the cliff…….I was terrified, peed my pants and cried, and you said, “It’ll be alright.” – We shared high school classes and went on double dates. When one of those dates broke up with me, I cried for days, and you said, “It’ll be alright.” – We both seemed to lose our way in our adult years and rarely saw each other. We came together after the death of our significant others and then the death of Mama. After each of those heartbreaks, you told me, “It’ll be alright.” – I called you at the hospital last week to ask if I could come see you and stay at your house and you said, “That’ll be alright.” – Our visit was very brief, you weren’t able to say much. I knew this would be our last visit. I cried as I combed your hair, held your hand, kissed you goodbye, then whispered in your ear, “It’ll be alright.” Thank you for being there for all those tears. I love you, Steve.

“Bear” was always bigger than life. He was a kind man and was known by so many people. You will be missed and always remembered and loved by those of us that knew the man ‘Bear’. You are now at peace.

Heartfelt condolences to Steve’s family. I’ve only known him for 5 years but what I do know of him he was a sweet soul and often helped me out when I needed someone for the pool repairs. Even coming out in the freezing weather to repair a pump on Thanksgiving when no one else would. He will be thought of fondly and missed dearly.
