Shirley Jean Dollar

• Shirley Jean Dollar, 85, of Crestview, Florida, passed away at HCA Fort Walton Hospital on Saturday, September 24, 2022. Shirley was born in Blue Mountain, Alabama, but lived most of her life in Crestview, Florida. Shirley J. Dollar married the love of her life, Jack Dollar, on August 8, 1959, in Florala, Alabama. Jack passed away on February 12, 2022. Their love story lasted 62 years and produced two sons and one

  daughter: Dannie J. Dollar, Jacqueline D. Strickland (David), Jack R. Dollar II (Tracey).

  The local community knew Shirley Dollar as a seamstress. It quickly became known that she just needed a picture to go by to create her sewing magic. She liked shiny, sparkly material and could do magic with the sewing machine. One of our favorite stories is when her mom came home one day and the curtains were missing. Shirley had made a beautiful prom dress out of them!

  We feel like she received her wings on earth because of her patience with Big Jack and having to listen to his LONG stories. We are sure the kids heard her raise her voice when they were growing up; however, she was very soft-spoken and we don’t remember her speaking ill of anyone. She definitely adhered to the adage, “If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all.”

  She loved to garden, whether it was vegetables or flowers. She could root just about anything and make it grow. Her favorite flowers were yellow roses. She got most people started with gardening by introducing them to her specialty – gardenia bushes. We all pretty much do the same since we learned from the best.

  She was also quite the pack rat and could always figure out how to reuse something. If you went with her to a restaurant, something would be placed in her purse for an animal at the house. Her soft spot, other than her children, was animals! She got this trait from her parents (Audrey and JD). She enjoyed watching all kinds of birds but especially hummingbirds. Once she moved to the farm in Baker she had many more animals to keep up with and feed. She would report daily on the comings and goings of each group of dogs, cats, pigs, goats, and chickens. They kept her entertained and Jack and Tracey’s feed bill went up considerably as almost all of the animals were being treated to cat food.

  Her favorite pastime was to “go West” to Wind Creek Casino. She normally would win but would be happy either way because she was usually with one of her kids. She had an adventurous side to her and was always up for a shopping trip or road trip of any kind. In 2021 she took her first airplane ride and loved it. She enjoyed seeing Yellowstone and all the animals. She even enjoyed riding a horse at the age of 84!

  Shirley made friends for a lifetime. It might be years in between visits, but she would pick back up with a cup of coffee and a “catch up” story and go from there. Some of her dear friends were Patsy, Gayle, Pennie, and Gloria.

  As much as she loved her friends and animals, her family was what made her heartbeat. She would always greet us with the best hugs. She gave the type of hug that said something without saying something! She truly wanted to know how we all were, what we had been doing, how we were feeling, and if there was anything she could do for us. If anyone felt sick or had any type of ailment, she would tell us what would fix it which ALWAYS seemed to include some type of herbs.

  Whether you knew Shirley as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, or client the hole that she leaves is huge.

  She was the same with everyone. She was a kid at heart who was loving and caring with a calm demeanor.

  She was also a quiet-spoken and gentle soul with a fun personality. To say she was loved and will be missed is such an understatement. Until we meet again…..with much love!

  Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Jay Daniel Pruett; mother, Audrey Jenkins Pruett; husband, Jack R. Dollar; and sister, Joan M. Willett.

  Survivors include six grandchildren: Chris Fenoff, Toni Jones (Reese), Casey Fenoff, Daniel Dollar, Sheena Powell, and Steven Dollar. Six great-grandchildren: Cheyene Strickland, Brandi Mayo, Andrew Fenoff, Ethan Fenoff, Caleb Fenoff, and Athena Dollar. One great-great-grandchild: Luna Rae Young. Other survivors include one brother-in-law, Lewis Myerson of CA. Nieces and nephews: Cindy, Dee (Bill), Wayne “Gus” (Michelle), and Tracy.

  Funeral Services will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, October 2, 2022, in the Chapel of Brackney Funeral Service. Visitation will begin at 1:00PM with the service to follow at 2:00PM with David Bracewell officiating.
